From risk to resilience and how to adapt

Institution of Civil Engineers webinar

It’s time to think differently about the future – about how we respond to unanticipated events like COVID-19 and how we prepare for more foreseeable risks associated with climate change and other natural and human factor hazards.

When individuals and systems are resilient, they’re able to withstand, recover quickly, learn and adapt to the adversities they experience.

Consideration of ‘black swan’ and climate risks in planning, design and operation of infrastructure is driven by a variety of factors:

  • Potential effects on assets and service continuity
  • Recognition of Directors’ responsibilities to inform and act on such risks
  • Pressure from finance sector participants and shareholders to assess, manage, govern and disclose climate risks in line with recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)
  • Legislation and policy (in some jurisdictions) mandating the consideration and disclosure of climate change risks.
