Managing Fractures Safely on the Railway

IMechE in-person event

Overview

In recent times there has been a significant number of rolling stock fracture events on mainline and metro fleets that have had a major impact on trains available for service and/or the costs of additional maintenance and final resolution.
No operator or maintainer is immune from these problems – whether they’re responsible for old or new rolling stock. Traditionally, fractures were a dominant factor in managing older fleets and life extensions – however there are recent high-profile examples affecting new fleets also.

Either way, the main challenge is the “surprise” factor – all of these recent significant events were sudden and significant to the railway companies involved, having major impacts on their businesses, revenue and funding requirements.

This event aims to look at what went wrong, why it went wrong and give practical examples of what can be done to manage these situations whilst maintaining scheduled services as far as possible to reduce the financial impact.
