Dame Judith Hackitt

At the Hazards Forum annual lecture incorporating the IMechE Hugh Ford Prestige Lecture Dame Judith Hackitt provides some personal reflections on the moral and ethical importance of genuine felt safety leadership and the difference between management and leadership. She will talk about the transformational journey that she was part of in the chemical industry following the tragedy at Flixborough in 1974 and which led to the worldwide industry commitment to Responsible Care. She will also reflect on her experience as chair of the Health and Safety Executive from 2007-2016 and some of the best – and worst – safety cultures she encountered.

In 2017 Dame Judith was asked to conduct an independent review into building safety and fire regulations following the terrible tragedy at Grenfell Tower. What began as a review which was completed within a year has now turned into an extended mission – to drive culture change and bring safety leadership to a sector which has been engaged in a “race to the bottom” for far too long.

Despite having made significant progress in the last 25 years in improving workplace safety in construction, the sector has failed to feel that same sense of responsibility to deliver homes and buildings which are fit for purpose and safe for all of us to live and work in.

  • How did this happen?
  • What is the role of regulation in driving change?
  • How does a very fragmented and adversarial industry sector come together to work collaboratively and show real leadership?
  • What can we learn from other sectors to speed up progress? How do we get ethics on the agenda in board rooms?

This event is held in partnership with IMechE. Post event networking will be held at IMechE, 1 Birdcage Walk, London, SW1H 9JJ (1 minute walk from ICE).

Please note that delegate data is shared with the Hazards Forum and IMechE.
