Hazards Forum welcome three new members from high-hazard industry in 2022
This year, the Hazards Forum had the pleasure of welcoming three new members that work in high-hazard industry, in both the STEM sector and for the UK Government.
Fluor, Sellafield Ltd and the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) all share in the Hazards Forum’s vision, “…to be widely recognised as the independent enabler of the most needed debates and as a key source of interdisciplinary knowledge on the control of major hazards.”
We are delighted to have these organisations on-board and are especially looking forward to collaborating with them closely in the future with joint endeavours in the field of hazards. Growing our community of organisations and individuals interested in hazards and risks has always been our priority. With these three new partnerships, we are excited to share in their wealth of specific industry knowledge as well as learn lessons from experts that work within their respective organisations.

About Sellafield Ltd
Sellafield Ltd is a global centre for nuclear engineering management.
As a nuclear fuel reprocessing and nuclear decommissioning site in Cumbria and government organisation, their aim is to create “…a clean and safe environment for future generations”. Sellafield works on behalf of their owner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, from cleaning-up the UK’s highest nuclear risks and hazards to safeguarding nuclear fuel, materials and waste. Its four value streams include:
- Retrievals: retrieving nuclear waste, fuel and sludge that are stored inside their legacy ponds and silos, the highest risks and hazards at Sellafield
- Remediation: beyond the legacy ponds and silos, they have hundreds of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities at Sellafield that need to be cleaned-up
- Spent nuclear fuel management: currently store and reprocess spent nuclear fuel. This means, taking the fuel that has been used inside a nuclear power station and extracting the individual component parts of plutonium, uranium and waste. Their mission will change significantly as we come to the end of reprocessing
- Special nuclear materials: they have the facilities and expertise to provide safe, secure and appropriate storage for special nuclear materials
About the ORR
The ORR regulate the rail industry’s health and safety performance. Their aim is to improve the safety, value, and performance of railways and roads in the UK. The “ORR protects the interests of rail and road users”.
This government organisation ensure that the rail industry is competitive and fair. In addition to this, they monitor the National Highways and have economic regulatory functions in relation to railways in Northern Ireland and the UK section of the Channel Tunnel.
